Details on Telcare's wireless glucose monitor

A new FDA approved diabetes meter that instantly transmits a patient's readings to a private online database through a wireless cell connection is making the rounds at CES.

The device made by Telcare wirelessly transmits the data using the T-Mobile network, but can use other networks or it can sit on the data until a signal is available.

Description from Telcare:

"28 million Americans have diabetes and must use blood glucose meters to manage their condition. They are required to maintain logs of multiple-times-a-day tests and bring the log to the doctor. With Telcare's product, each time a person with diabetes tests blood sugar, the data are instantly communicated to Telcare's secure cloud server and, from there to the doctor's medical record. The user receives immediate feedback and clinical coaching right on the screen of the meter. For children and elderly people with diabetes, the data can be instantly transmitted to the cell phone of loved ones who are critical to maintaining safe control from day to day"

Pricing:

Insurance coverage may end up reducing costs of the device but currently a meter costs $150 for a starter kit. The cost drops to $100 if you subscribe to a one-year supply of test strips. The strips cost $56 for a container of 50, or $36 with the subscription.
