Persistent sensing technology: PlaceMe

palceme-locationAlohar Mobile is a startup lead by former Googler Sam Liang creating a new persistent sensing platform that collects location and other data from your smartphone's sensors (motion, altitude, direction, wifi, timing, etc) and quickly analyzes it to understand a user's behavior.

Watch the video below of Scoble interviewing Sam Liang to get a better understanding of the scope of knowledge that can be acquired using cloud databases and this technology, or you can test out PlaceMe their first showcase app here.

An example service that could be created using this type of data gathering is a health app that privately monitors a user each day and gives him feedback about his daily activity and how it is matching up against his health improvement schedule. It could remind the user that he has not been active enough during the day yet or has been stopping at a few too many drive-through restaurants this week to meet his monthly goals.

Below is a screenshot from the video showing Sam at his local Walmart that takes into consideration how long he had waited in line within the store.
